Historic preservation is one of the major themes of this year's grant awards given by the Chatham Cultural Council. The council received 28 grant requests and funded either all or part of 17. Though the council received only $2,000 from the state for 2005, additional monies were raised from private contributions for a total of $9,253.

This year's awardees include Barbara Cotnam from the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, who received a grant to preserve historic photographs, documents, telegrams, etc. in archival display cases. Chatham resident Christopher Seufert, an award-winning documentary producer and founder of Mooncusser Films, received a grant for his proposal to create a Chatham online media archive.

Chatham public schools also received funds for educational field trips. Additional grants were given to Cape Cod Opera, Cape Cod Museum of Art, Meeting House Chamber Music Festival, Creative Arts Center, council on aging, Academy of Performing Arts, and Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival.

Two other projects awarded funds include "Project Concern," which will hold a Hip Hop dance performance in conjunction with the Harwich Cultural Council, and Buck Expeditions, which offers a Youth Explorer program for local schools.

Chatham Cultural Council Announces Grants

January 26, 2006

The town’s cultural council recently approved funding of 17 grant requests, totaling $9,253.

The two largest single grant awards went to projects focused on historical preservation. The Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, represented by Barbara Cotnam, was awarded $1,475 to preserve historic photographs, documents, telegrams and other documents related to the Marconi radio facility in archival display cases. The papers will be on display at the Atwood House Museum when the project is completed.

Another history related grant was awarded to Christopher Seufert of Mooncusser Films, who is working to create an online media archive of historic Chatham materials. He was awarded a grant of $1,525.

All three of the town’s schools were awarded grants by the council. They include a second and third grade enrichment program called “Bringing the Museum to the Classroom,” which received a $750 grant; a middle school “Café Francais” and “Café del Mundo” French and Spanish multidisciplinary projects, at $300; field trips to the Harwich Junior Theatre for both the middle and high schools, at $695 and $500, respectively; and a middle school field trip to the Bose exhibit “Harmony in Music” sponsored by the Marconi Center, at $400.

Other grants awarded by the council include: $400 to the Academy of Performing Arts for its Arts in the Schools Dance program; a youth explorer program by Buck Expeditions, $300; Cape Cod Opera, $440 for its outreach productions; Cape & Islands Chamber Music Festival, two Chatham chamber music concerts, $500; Cape Cod Museum of Fine Arts, $200 for its Artworks/Art Internship Program in visual arts; Creative Arts Center, $393 for a children’s one-stroke painting visual arts program; $250 to the Meeting House Chamber Music Festival summer chamber music series; and $600 to Project Concern for a hip-hop dance performance.

The council received a total of 28 grant requests. Although it only receives $2,000 from the state, the council was able to increase its ability to distribute grant fund through more than $7,000 in contributions from individuals, businesses and local organizations. The council is the only one on the Cape that engages in its own fundraising.

The council also added new members in 2005, including Deborah Swenson, currently serving as treasurer, Monica Bienert, and Barbara Walters, who rejoined the council and will provide expertise in computer and interpretive sciences.

In addition, Christopher Seufert is volunteering his time to create a web site for the council, www.chathamculturalcouncil.org. All grant-supported activities and events will be posted on the site, as well as instructions on how to apply for future grants.
