CHATHAM CULTURAL COUNCIL ANNOUNCES GRANT DEADLINES
AND GRANT WRITING & GUIDELINES WORKSHOP
The Chatham Cultural Council announces its annual grant cycle for 2009-2010. The deadline for applications is October 15, 2009. To assist applicants in preparing an effective funding proposal, the Council is presenting a Grant Writing & Guidelines Workshop on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Chatham Eldredge Library from 10:30 to 12:30. Teachers needing assistance with applications may contact Barbara S. Waters at 508-945-3631 or at bwaters14@verizon.net.
Grant applications are available at the Eldredge Public Library, Town Hall (lobby), the Creative Arts Center, the School Department, and the Council on Aging. Applications in Adobe PDF format can be found online at www.massculturalcouncil.org/applications/lccapp.html.org or www.chathamculturalcouncil.org
All applications must be mailed to the Chatham Cultural Council, Chatham Town Office, 549 Main Street, Chatham, MA 02633, and must be postmarked no later than October 15, 2009. Applications may be delivered by hand to Town Hall, no later than October 15th. This is the only deadline, no applications are accepted outside this grant cycle. Emailed applications will not be accepted. Applications should not be mailed to MCC directly.
The Chatham Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 local cultural councils across the state. Each year the state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which then allocates funds to each community. In Chatham, additional monies are provided by the Town of Chatham, and through the generosity of Chatham’s citizens, businesses and organizations, for the funding of a cross-section of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year.
Enrichment for the Town of Chatham is the Council’s first priority. Partnership with other towns is encouraged as long as it benefits Chatham residents. The council does not fund the same project more than three times. To expedite the Council’s review process, applicants are asked to provide one original, and 15 review copies. Applications aimed at local schools must contain evidence that the applicant or organization has contacted the school or teachers, providing a contact name and letter of support.
During October and November, council members evaluate the applications, determining which ones will receive grants, and notify grantees. More information about the grant program is available at www.chathamculturalcouncil.org and www.massculturalcouncil.org.

CHATHAM CULTURAL COUNCIL ANNOUNCES 2009 GRANTS
The Chatham Cultural Council recently awarded grants totaling $19,436 for the 2008-2009 grant cycle. Of the thirty-nine grant applications the Council received, twenty-five qualified for either partial or full funding. Guidelines for selection and grant monies are provided by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The Town of Chatham matched $4,000 in state monies to support public programs and educational activities in the arts, sciences and humanities. The remaining amount came from the generosity of local individuals and merchants during the Council's annual fund raising drive.
Statewide, more than $2.65 million will be distributed by local cultural councils in 2009, supporting a range of grassroots activities: concerts, exhibitions, historical preservation, lectures, First Night celebrations, and nature and science educational activities. On the local level, nearly half of the funds support educational activities for young people.
Grants benefitting the Chatham schools included field trips to Woods Hole, Harwich Junior Theater and Chatham Drama Guild, visiting performances by the Cape Cod Opera and Allegretto Musical Instrument Outreach, as well as an After School Photography Project. Partial funding was awarded to the Chatham High School Latin class for its Rome trip, and Chatham Elementary School for Bringing the Museum to the Classroom, a series of popular art history classes. Chatham Youth Services also received a grant for an art mentoring program, Chathams Young Artists.
Making limited resources go as far as possible in the local community, partial funding was provided to First Night Chatham Childrens Programs, Friends of Monomoy Theatre for a family musical, HONK, the Tides Dance Company, and the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, 30th anniversary season. The Council also provided funds for "30 Years at Stage Harbor: An Interactive Installation Photo Show and Guglielmo Marconi Architecture Salvage Documentation. Grants were also given to the Cape Cod Museum of Art Intern Program, and the Chatham Historical Society for conservation of paintings and maps.
Funding for workshops was provided to the Chatham Council on Aging and Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & Islands. Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary/Audubon received grants for natural history field studies with Chatham schools and public lectures. Finally, a grant was awarded to Friends of Chatham Waterways toward the publication of "The Chatham Blue Pages," a resource to help preserve and protect our water ecosystem, that will be mailed to all Chatham residents.
The Chatham Cultural Council holds an annual community workshop on the last Saturday in September at the Eldredge Public Library. In 2008, seventeen organizations or individuals either attended or expressed interest in receiving assistance in writing successful grant applications. The annual workshop also fulfills the Massachusetts Cultural Council open meeting requirement to gather community input.
The Chatham Cultural Council will seek applications again in October 2009. Information and forms are available on our website, www.chathamculturalcouncil.org or by emailing Barbara Waters at bwaters14@verizon.net.

Historic preservation
is one of the major themes of this year's grant awards given
by the Chatham Cultural Council. The council received 28 grant
requests and funded either all or part of 17. Though the council
received only $2,000 from the state for 2005, additional
monies were raised from private contributions for a total
of $9,253.
This year's awardees include Barbara Cotnam from the
Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, who received a grant
to preserve historic photographs, documents, telegrams,
etc. in archival display cases. Chatham resident Christopher
Seufert, an award-winning documentary producer and founder
of Mooncusser Films, received a grant for his proposal
to create a Chatham online media archive.
Chatham public schools also received funds for educational field trips. Additional
grants were given to Cape Cod Opera, Cape Cod Museum of Art, Meeting House
Chamber Music Festival, Creative Arts Center, council on aging, Academy of
Performing Arts, and Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival.
Two other projects
awarded funds include "Project Concern," which
will hold a Hip Hop dance performance in conjunction with the Harwich
Cultural Council, and Buck Expeditions, which offers a Youth Explorer
program for local schools.
